How to show up in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode for B2B buyer questions

By Fame Team

Key Takeaways

  • Google says there are no additional requirements. A page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet.
  • Ranking still matters. Ahrefs found 76% of AI Overview citations also rank in the top 10.
  • Cover the subtopics behind a buyer question, because both features may run several related searches.
  • AI feature traffic is counted inside the Web search type in Search Console, so track prompts separately.

To show up in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode for B2B buyer questions, make sure pages are indexed and snippet-eligible, rank for the question and its related subtopics, and write specific answers in plain text. Google says there are no additional technical requirements. No special file or markup will get you in, and inclusion is never guaranteed.

What does Google actually require?

Google's AI features guide is unusually direct. A page qualifies as a supporting link if it is indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet. Google adds that there are no additional requirements, and that meeting the basics does not guarantee it will crawl, index or serve the page.

The guide says you do not need new AI text files or machine-readable files, and that no special schema exists for these features. It points instead to fundamentals:

  • Allow crawling in robots.txt and through your CDN or host.
  • Use internal links so pages can be found.
  • Provide a good page experience.
  • Keep important content in text form.
  • Make structured data match the visible text.

That rules out a lot of paid advice. If a vendor sells a special AI markup for Google, ask them to show where Google documents it.

How do you check that your key pages are eligible?

Pick the 20 pages closest to buying decisions. For each one:

  1. Run the URL through URL Inspection in Search Console and confirm it is indexed.
  2. Check that Google received the correct HTML. Google recommends this step if content behaves unexpectedly.
  3. Look for nosnippet or restrictive max-snippet settings, which limit what can appear in Search, including AI features.
  4. Check that noindex has not been left on by accident, which keeps a page out of Search entirely.
  5. Confirm the key facts are text. A price inside an image or a comparison in a video offers little to work with.

Know that Google-Extended is a separate control. Google says it limits use of content for AI training and grounding in other Google systems, while Googlebot controls crawling for Search.

Does ranking still matter for AI Overviews?

Yes, on the best available data. Ahrefs' analysis, published January 2026 by a company that sells SEO tools, reported:

  • 76% of 1.9 million AI Overview citations also rank in the traditional top 10.
  • Pages ranking for fan-out queries were 161% more likely to be cited.
  • AI Overviews appear on 21% of keywords, and on 57.9% of question queries against 15.5% for non-questions.
  • Word count correlates close to zero with citations.

Ahrefs' stability study adds a useful detail: 29% of AI Overview citations lasted seven or more days when the page ranked in Google, against 4% when it did not. These are correlations, but they all point the same way. For Google's AI features, SEO is the foundation rather than a separate discipline, and longer pages are not automatically better.

What is query fan-out and how do you plan for it?

Google describes query fan-out as breaking a question into subtopics and issuing many queries at once. Its guide says both AI Overviews and AI Mode may do this and can find supporting pages along the way, which allows a broader set of links than a classic search.

For B2B, map the subtopics a serious buyer would need. Take "best payroll software for a 200-person company with staff in three countries." It likely breaks into:

  • Multi-country payroll requirements
  • Pricing for 200 employees
  • Compliance and data security
  • Integrations with existing HR systems
  • Implementation time
  • Named alternatives and reviews

Fan-out is Google's own process, so you cannot see the exact queries for your topic. This list is an informed guess, which you can test with real answers and Search Console queries. Give each subtopic a clear section on a main page, or a separate page where the subject deserves its own depth, and link them together.

What should a B2B page look like?

Start each page with a direct answer in plain language, then add evidence. Google's helpful content guidance asks whether content shows first-hand experience and depth, whether authorship is clear, and whether it was made mainly to help people. It also warns against changing dates to look fresh when content has not substantially changed.

Put those ideas into practice with:

  • A named author with a real background.
  • Specifics from delivering the product: setup time, limits, typical buyer and known trade-offs.
  • Real pricing, or a clear statement of what affects price.
  • Comparison tables with fair criteria.
  • Honest updates with changed information, not just a new date.

Lists deserve attention too. Ahrefs reported "best" lists account for 48.90% of AI Overview citations in its data, so check who appears in lists for your category. See how to write an answer page for structure, and run drafts through the AI readability grader.

Should you still add structured data?

Add it where it accurately describes the page and supports normal Search uses, but do not expect it to unlock AI features. In Ahrefs' study of 1,885 pages adding JSON-LD, the effect against matched controls was -4.6% in AI Overviews and +2.4% in AI Mode. The AI Mode result could not be told apart from zero, and the AI Overview decline was small and unexplained. The studied pages already had many citations, so results may differ for pages not yet surfaced. Still, it supports Google's statement that there is no special markup to add.

How do you measure results?

Use two sources together.

Search Console shows clicks, impressions and queries. Google says traffic from AI features is included in overall Search data under the Web search type. It does not, in the guide reviewed here, give you a list of answers that named you, so use Search Console for trend data and for spotting question-style queries.

A manual prompt log shows presence. Google says AI Overviews appear only when its systems judge them useful and often do not trigger, so record whether an overview appeared at all before counting a miss. Then log whether you were cited and named, and who else appeared. Track these separately: Ahrefs found that in 77% of AI Overview cases and 84% of AI Mode cases, the cited site's brand was not named.

Expect movement and judge trends over weeks. Half of AI Overview citations and 58% of AI Mode citations were gone by day two in the stability study. The weekly tracking method explains how to run this, and the same log can cover other engines.

Expect some clicks to shift too. Ahrefs reports click-through drops of 34.5% linked to AI Overviews, so a flat traffic line on a page that gets cited is not automatically a failure. Add a source question to your demo form so you can catch buyers who researched in AI tools and never clicked through.

Where should a small team start?

Do the eligibility audit first because it is quick and any problem blocks everything else. Then choose the five buyer questions closest to revenue, check where you rank, and improve the page nearest page one. Add missing subtopic sections and link to them from related pages.

If you want a team doing this for you, Fame's B2B SEO work sits within Fame Search, which is Fame's own paid service at $2,000 a month with Search Console and GA4 reporting. Fame's site logged 42,966 Google impressions in the 28 days to October 30, 2026. That is Fame's own site, not a client result, and Fame has no client results to report yet.
