AI visibility tool or AI search agency: which one does a B2B team need first?

By Fame Team

Key Takeaways

  • Start with a tool if you have someone who can act on what it shows.
  • Start with an agency if nobody has time to fix pages and write content.
  • Published tool plans run from $29 to $495 a month, and engine coverage varies by plan.
  • A cheap test can come first: run your own buyer questions by hand before paying anyone.

Most B2B teams should choose based on who will do the work. If you have someone with time to fix pages and write content, start with a tool, since tools show the gaps cheaply. If nobody has that time, a tool only produces a report nobody acts on, so an agency or service makes more sense.

What does each option actually do?

An AI visibility tool sends a set of prompts to AI engines, records which brands and sources appear, and shows the trend. Many add recommendations. It does not usually rewrite your pages, fix your site or contact third parties for you, though some vendors are adding features in that direction.

An AI search agency or managed service may include that same tracking, then does the work itself: technical fixes, new pages and outreach, in whatever scope you agree. You pay more because labor is included. Quality varies widely, and the questions to ask an agency are worth using.

The simplest test is what changes on your website next month. With a tool, the answer depends on your team. With an agency, it should be written in the scope.

What does each one cost?

These are prices published on each vendor's own page when we checked on November 3, 2026.

Prices change, and OtterlyAI's page also shows a lower set of figures that appear to reflect its annual discount, so confirm before buying. We have not listed other agencies here because we only include figures we could check on a company's own pricing page.

Tool costs can climb when you match the coverage you want. Tracking 100 prompts on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude on OtterlyAI Standard would be $189 + $59 for Gemini + $109 for Claude, or $357 a month at list price.

The bigger cost is staff time. A tool's price is only part of the bill, because someone has to read the results and do the work. Estimate the hours per month at your own loaded cost before comparing it with a retainer.

When should a B2B team start with a tool?

A tool is the right first step when most of these are true:

  • You have a marketer or SEO person with real time each week to act on findings.
  • You can publish to your site without waiting weeks for a developer.
  • You are not yet convinced AI search matters in your category, and you want evidence before spending more.
  • You want to check an existing agency's reporting independently.
  • Your budget does not stretch to a monthly retainer.

A tool also forces useful discipline. To set one up, you must write down the questions your buyers ask. That list has value whichever way you go next.

When should a B2B team start with an agency?

An agency or managed service is the better first step when:

  • Your team is already at capacity, and new dashboards would simply go unread.
  • You know you are missing from answers and do not need more proof to act.
  • You lack someone who understands both technical site issues and content.
  • Competitors are being cited for questions you could answer well, and the gap is mostly pages that do not exist yet.

The trade-off is less direct control and a higher monthly commitment. You also rely on the agency's judgment and, in a young category, a shorter track record. Ask for evidence and be clear about whether it comes from clients or from the agency's own site.

Can you test this before buying anything?

Yes, and you should. An afternoon of manual work gives you a surprisingly useful answer:

  1. Write 15 to 20 questions from recent sales calls, including some that do not mention your brand.
  2. Run each question three times in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude. Use a fresh chat each time.
  3. Record whether you were named, who else was named and which pages were cited.
  4. Note what the cited pages have that yours do not.
  5. Estimate how much of the fix your current team could realistically do in a month.

If the result is "we appear often and only need to monitor it," buy a tool or keep doing it by hand. If it is "we are missing and nobody has time," you need more capacity. Fame's free AI visibility checker, share of answers calculator and AI readability grader can speed up parts of this.

What should you check in the tool data?

Whichever you choose, read the numbers carefully. Tracking tools query engines in ways that may not match what a logged-in buyer sees, and answers vary across runs. Evertune, a vendor, points out that a cited URL does not necessarily shape a response. Engines can also shift suddenly: OtterlyAI recorded ChatGPT's Reddit share falling from 4.42% to 0.39% of citations after changes in August 2026. Use trends across a stable set of questions, and avoid reacting to a single week.

Also check that a tool's prompts reflect your buyers. Suggested prompts are a starting point. A question set that a vendor generated from your homepage may look nothing like what a procurement lead types.

Should you ever run both?

Sometimes. If an agency tracks and reports its own work, a separate low-cost tool gives you an independent check, and that is reasonable for a larger budget. For most small teams, though, paying twice for tracking is hard to justify. Look at whether the agency's service includes tracking and whether you can see the prompts and raw answers. If you can, a second tool may add little.

A common progression is to begin with a manual test, move to a tool, and bring in outside help once the tool shows gaps your team cannot close. Going straight to a service is also reasonable when the capacity problem is already obvious.

What does Fame offer here?

Fame publishes this article and sells Fame Search, so factor that in. It is a managed service rather than software: weekly tracking across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Gemini, one action on your site each day with up to 10 new or improved pages a month, competitor watch, outreach drafts for third-party lists, Search Console and GA4 tracking, and a weekly email with a portal Search tab. You approve everything, and Tom Hunt, Fame's CEO, manages it.

It will be poor value if you only want a dashboard, since the tools above cost far less. Fame also has no client results to show yet. Its published numbers are from its own site, as explained on our AI visibility page.
