Matt Welle

CEO at Mews

Matt Welle

"The only way Mews can drive change in hospitality is if we spend more time in hotels, at the front line and understand the challenges users face in the most high pressure environment."

Matt Welle is CEO of Mews, the industry-leading hospitality cloud. Matt spent more than a decade at Hilton, learning the business from one of the biggest brands in the sector. He left Hilton to work on the launch of Prague’s Emblem Hotel, where he realized that the hotel management system he wanted didn’t yet exist.

Matt believes that technology is the only way to learn about your property, your guests, and deliver the best for both of them, and so he joined the Mews journey at its beginning in 2012.

In the time since, Matt has driven the company’s growth to 12,500+ customers in 85 countries, organically and through M&A; led the business through several successful funding rounds; built a team of 1,250+ employees with offices in Europe, the United States and Australia and won the prestigious Hotello of the Year in 2025 at the HotelloTOP Year Event.

Matt, Mews raised $300 million at a $2.5 billion valuation earlier this year, after being valued at $1.2 billion in 2024. When a company grows that quickly, how do you stop the pressure to scale from pulling you away from the original hotelier problems you set out to solve?

Mews’ acquisition of DataChat was framed as a move toward fully agentic hospitality systems, where digital workers could autonomously handle areas like operations, revenue, and staffing. Where do you draw the line between a task that should be handed completely to an AI agent and one where removing the human would actually make hospitality worse?

Mews processed nearly $20 billion in transactions in 2025, while expanding beyond the traditional PMS into payments, revenue management, analytics and AI. At what point does becoming the operating system for the hotel create a new responsibility not to become the kind of all-encompassing legacy platform Mews originally set out to replace?

You’ve been very open about the fact that better technology alone doesn’t fix a hotel if the underlying processes are broken. As AI makes it easier to automate almost anything, do you think there’s a danger that hotels will start automating bad processes faster rather than questioning why those processes exist in the first place?

Mews has talked about moving beyond traditional measures like RevPAR and using richer data to understand the total value generated by a property and its guests. If you could replace one deeply ingrained metric or assumption that still shapes how hotels are run today, what would you get rid of and what would you measure instead?
