Meet Patrick Cootes. As Head of Product at Mindstone Learning and with 20 years of experience in Education, he shares how context is key to knowledge management in 2022.
Patrick Cootes is a learning expert with nearly 20 years of experience in the public sector. He’s a Co-Founder & Head of Product at Mindstone Learning, a company empowering people and companies globally to learn faster and remember more.
As a secondary school teacher and Head of Sixth Form, Patrick has seen first-hand how the current education system leaves people feeling like failures when it’s the system itself that is broken.
For 18 years he watched people fed into an educational machine modelled on a Victorian factory and leaving with neither the skills needed in the workplace nor the love of learning which could unlock their personal growth.
A few years ago, Patrick met Joshua Wohle, a successful serial entrepreneur, and their conversation about a better education experience immediately clicked. And so Patrick co-founded Mindstone to build a platform that works for the learner, not the institution.
Now he’s on a mission to empower organizations to change the way their approach to knowledge management and learning.

Every piece of knowledge in your company is highly contextualized. Every process, every decision, every SOP. The resources are in place but the reasoning WHY we do it “this way” is missing. As a result, knowledge gets siloed within different departments which makes it difficult to understand each other’s responsibilities, live up to the company values, or train new hires effectively.
On your podcast, Patrick can talk about how to approach knowledge management in 2022 and debunk the common knowledge management misconceptions. He’ll expand on the right way to trace the decision-making process and protect your institutional memory or how to be aligned on OKRs while understanding all the context.
It’s widely acknowledged that there is a huge lag between joining a company and getting up to speed. And while companies have training systems in place, they struggle to communicate the context to answer questions such as: “How do we do things around here?, “Why?” or “How did we get here?”. That leads to slowing down the training as processes and SOPs are just one part of the equation.
On your podcast, Patrick can share actionable tips to get new hires up to speed faster. He’ll also talk about scientifically-proven principles of contextualising your company knowledge to allow new hires to learn faster and remember more. Your listeners haven’t heard this yet. Guaranteed.
Company Values don’t come from a document that new hires read on Day 1 or from a fancy “About Us” page. Yet, leaders around the world make this mistake all the time. They believe that just “writing our values somewhere” will magically make everyone live up to them. It simply doesn’t work like that.
On your podcast, Patrick will share how to embed company values into every action, every document, and every piece of knowledge. As a result, employees will understand how the company was built and, most importantly, why. Patrick will also talk about the strategy they’re using at Mindstone to be aligned all the time, while growing super fast.
If there’s a specific topic you would like Patrick to focus on during the interview that is not listed here, please do let us know.
