Early diagnosis is crucial for children with autism. The average age of diagnosis is four years old and during the pandemic, wait times to get an autism evaluation became even longer. Kayla saw there was a huge need to reduce the average wait time for an autism diagnosis in the United States, so she started a virtual clinic for autism.
On your podcast, Kayla as a researcher and clinician, can share her journey to becoming CEO of As You Are and how she developed a virtual process for autism evaluations for kids. Sharing the importance of her work and why you should never back down from a problem. Specifically, how she changed direction from pursuing a PhD, a path she always imagined for herself, in order to pursue a new dream.
The early developmental period of a child’s life is important, and taking notice when developmental milestones are not being met before preschool is crucial. Why? A child’s brain is primed for learning early in life. Therefore, if children receive support services early in life, they are on track for even brighter outcomes. But in some states, parents are waiting years to get an autism diagnosis.
On your podcast, Kayla can talk about why parents and teachers should pay attention to the signs of autism. Specifically, what signs teachers and parents can look for and how an easily accessible simple screening tool can help. Lastly, explain why there was a need to hire more clinicians specially trained to evaluate children at risk for autism.
In the US, the wait time for an autism evaluation is between 12 to 30 months. In some areas of the US, it can be even longer. Over 80% of all counties in the US lack diagnostic resources, and families travel long distances to meet with specially trained clinicians who can evaluate their child for autism.
On your podcast, Kayla can share how telehealth provides timely and high-quality care that transcends geographic barriers. Specifically, why families encounter problems getting answers when their child isn’t meeting developmental milestones. She can explain why a virtual process for diagnosing autism is better for parents. Lastly, she can share how a team of pediatricians trained to evaluate children for autism using exclusively virtual appointments can reduce wait times to just weeks.
